Ilayaraja composes for a dance production

Chennai: Maestro Ilayaraja has composed a full-length musical composition for Bharata Natyam danseuse and architect Krithika Subrahmanian. The classical dance
production will be staged in December end as part of the Margazhi music and dance festival.
"This is the first time Raaja sir has taken up anything like this," says Krithika. The dance presentation, Swapnam, will involve dancers across India and will give
audiences a great experience. "It will be Indian and yet exotic."
Actually, initially she had not thought of approaching Ilayaraja to do the music for the production. While she and her friend were finalising the music for the
production, they were using one of his pieces from his Thiruvasagam. They then thought of approaching him. They got a chance to meet him. After hearing the script,
Ilayaraja asked, 'What should I do?' The danseuse asked him to provide three songs for the project. Ilayaraja stunned them by saying, 'Why just three? I'll compose for
the entire show'."
This meeting in August was followed by Ilayaraja's quick work. Ilayaraja gave them 16-18 pieces for the 90-minute production. He explored classical Carnatic ragas,
voice symphonies and violin symphonies. Karthika said, "He is truly great. We are going to release eight of the songs, which are about six to eight minutes-long, as a
music album."
Works of Kalidasa, Adi Shankara and Manikkavasagar, among others, have been set to music and singers from both Carnatic and film music worlds like Sudha Ragunathan, TV Gopalakrishnan, Abhishek Raghuram, Bharath Sundar and composer Sharreth have sung songs. Musicians like AK Palanivel, Embar Kannan, Rajhesh Vaidya, Palghat Sreeram and Karthik Raja have also contributed to the project.
